Beyond style and price, the right photographer is someone who makes you feel at ease. Here's how to find them.
Finding the right wedding photographer is, in many ways, more like dating than shopping. You're not simply evaluating a portfolio — you're assessing whether this person, who will be by your side for eight, ten, sometimes twelve hours on one of the most emotionally charged days of your life, is someone you can trust.
Start With Style
Begin with style, because style matters enormously. But be honest with yourself about what you're actually drawn to, rather than what you think you should want. Wedding photography encompasses a remarkable range: from the bright, airy, highly edited aesthetic that dominates Instagram, to the dark and moody, to film-emulated warmth, to true documentary photojournalism.
The Meeting Matters
When you meet with potential photographers — always meet before booking, even if only via video call — pay close attention to two things beyond their work: how they make you feel when they talk about photography, and how they respond to your specific vision.
